When you hear the word wait, what enters your
mind? Do you see yourself standing in an endless line at a department store,
sitting in a doctor’s office, or revving your motor in a traffic jam? Do you
see a hand holding a stop sign in front of your face? Do you see yourself
rigidly standing with arms crossed? Are you tapping your foot on the floor or
clicking your nails on your desk?
Most
of us envision motionless, irritating events whenever the word wait is uttered.
Patience and quietness leave the premises when the opportunity to wait presents
itself. We simply don’t like it.
Of course, if you heard the word wait and had
not seen it written, you may have thought this article was about weight. Many of
us don’t like that word either. During the holidays, we tend to ignore both
words and want things our own way, as much and as fast as possible. By January
first, we are looking for a health spa and a weight management program. We soon
realize that it takes more effort to get rid of weight than it did to accumulate
it. So, we wait for the weight to decrease. However, our willingness to wait
reduces instead of our weight. What we need is a wait management program!
But, wait! Who would devise such a program when our society demands everything in an instant – instant coffee, instant success, instant relationships? Yeesh!
Regardless of our instant-gratification society, waiting is inevitable. God built it into our universe as sure as gravity. It cannot be avoided or eliminated. Since God commands us to wait upon Him, He obviously established a wait management program to enable us to effectively carry out His order. The elements of God’s wait management program are similar to weight management programs – commitment, support, change of perspective, preparation, expectation, motivation, and exercise. In the following pages, we will discuss each of these aspects individually. They are set up as devotionals so you may read one a day and meditate on this God-given asset we call WAIT.
